Dave Martindale

It took 50 years before Joe and I got re-united after being classmates at Skyline.  I had just recently moved to Hurricane, Utah.  I was playing Golf at Sky Mountain golf course.  I was told to join the group on the 10th tee.  I introduced myself and Joe Carlisle said he knew a Dave Martindale, he had gone to school with.  I asked him where and what year?  Of course he said class of 69, Skyline.  I told him that was me.  He said no way, Dave was  skinny and tall, and of course handsome.  Yep, that's me!!!
I pulled his picture from the yearbook. Sure enough Joe and I hit it off immediately.
I contacted Mike Carter and Kim Hackett and we all played several times over last 6 or 7 years.  I will miss playing with my old friend Joe!  RIP

My first memory of Joe was as a second grader. I recall walking north on Mars Way, approaching the "new kid in town" (just moved in, about 100 yards from my house) flanked by "my" posse (kindergartners Eric Nelson and Steven Taft). Next detail recalled: Punches exchanged, me on the ground ("Down goes Emmett, down goes Emmett!"). New alpha in town. We had a great, but not quite spectacularly, close friendship for 10 years, but never connected after high school. I do miss him. RIP, Joe.

I first remember Joe at Eastwood Elementary. The boys would play football on the grassy level above the playground. Joe was nicknamed “Twinkletoes” because it seemed nobody could catch him when running the football. Then we went to Oakridge Elementary and next Wasatch Junior High followed by Churchill. And finally Skyline. We were in the Holladay 12th Ward and played on the basketball and softball teams together. We went on several  Scout camps, the last being a 20 mile canoe paddle back into the southeast arm of Yellowstone Lake. Joe was among that core of friends my age that describes my boyhood, together with Mark Emmett, Grant Collram, Brent Saetrum, Tom Fowler, Mike Tingey, David Ulrich, Mark Sorensen, Brent Laughlin, and Kelly Calder.   Joe and I lost contact  after Skyline but Mark Emmett and I spoke late last fall about getting together with Joe in the Spring and playing some golf down in Hurricane. I called Joe on the phone and he greeted me with that same “great to hear from you” tone in his voice I remembered as a boy. I’m grateful for that conversation. I wish we had made the effort to get together sooner. Lesson:  Don’t put off seeing a dear friend if you’re of a mind to. Till we meet again Joe.

All of these 3 posts about Joe were a cherished trip down memory lane.  Joe was a great friend, as was your list of other guys.  One thing I remember was that Joe was a fast runner, but Ginny Call (Christensen) beat us all! :)  Funny the things we remember!  Except for Diane Rogers Sorensen - - She remembers everything!!!

I thought it would take longer to get old, but life flys by.  We grew up in a wonderful neighborhood and time.  I don't know why we were all so fortunate.

I'll leave you with a little smile, dedicated to Gary Groenkyke. :)   I recently saw a video of Jack Klugman on the Johnny Carson Tonight show.  He came on stage and announced that his wife told him he couldn't tell any potty stories; but he was going to anyway! :)  He related that there were 3 old guys talking and the first said, "I sure wish I could go #1 like i used to, but it is just dribbles and drabs!"  The second said, "Yea, I wish i coulld go #2 like I used to but I'm usually stuffed up."  The third replied, " I don't have that problem.  At 7:30 every morning I'm peeing like a race horse.  And 5-minutes later I go #2.  My only problem is I don't get out ouf bed until 9:00!

Be well my friends!
