This was one of the first tragedies and the death of a classmate that I remember growing up.  Dick was a healthy kid and to imagine something like that taking his and his brother's lives, so close to home shook me to the core.  I am so thankful for being able to read this story again today and to rmember Dick.  I remember things as being much different.  As kids we all climbed those mountains and peaks.  I did not do it when there was snow on them except a number of times in the spring or early summer, but I could have.  But to think of an avalanche, was not anything that I ever thought of back then.  His death was a learning experience for me.  I remember Dick played ice hockey and that he had so much potential.  It is sad that his life was cut short by such a thing as an avalanche.  I have thought and remembered him often over the last 52 years.

What a tragedy.

I remember when this happened too, it was like a shock-wave went through school.  I liked Dick.  He was a friendly person.  I was talking to my husband about how as kids we had more freedom to roam around and explore our world.  Kids these days are too focused on unhealthy electronic gadgets and social media.  We had a large 100 acre field behind our house where we played all the time.  The sledding hill was a blast.  I could ride a quarter mile from the top to the bottom and land in my back yard.  The sand dunes up there were fun during the summer. We made a makeshift trampoline in the scruboak bushes with a piece of plywood.  Childhood in Utah was spectacular but could be dangerous. Along Wasatch Blvd, the hillsides are catacombed with old mines.  Another friend fell in and broke her leg during high school.  I only wish Dick and his brother had been aware of the dangers in our area canyons during the winter.
